Woodstock 15K

Steve Schallenkamp continued his fine spring season, leading the Gunks contingent at the Woodstock 15K with a third-place overall finish and yet another age-group win. His 1:00:02 trailed race winner and FOG John McGovern by nearly 3 minutes, as McGovern pulled off a nice weekend double, his victory coming only two days after placing third at the first Xterra New York Trail Run. Steve's finish helped him to extend his lead in the Onteora Grand Prix standings, which he attempting to win for the third consecutive year.

Doug Heller continued his comeback from a nagging ITB injury, running 1:17:25. Other strong performances were turned in by FOGs Abidi Bouazza (fourth, 1:00:37) and Myron Baker (15th, 1:05:54).

The next race in the Onteora GP is the Onteora Mile on June 13.

Xterra Trail Series #1: Black Bear Hollow

Yours truly won the Black Bear Hollow Trail Run, the first race in the inaugural Xterra New York Trail Run Series, on May 24, covering the hilly 9.2K course in 39:40.

The three-year-old Xterra Trail Run Series is an offshoot of the popular Xterra off-road triathlon events. The Trail Run Series is grouped into ten geographic regions, with each region hosting a series of between three and seven races to produce a series champion. Regional champions can earn free entry into the Xterra National Trail Championships (in Bend, OR, in September) and World Championships (Oahu in December). The three-race New York series makes its debut this year.

Local duathlon god John McGovern, the organizer of the New York series, hosted the race at his multipsort facility, then pulled double duty by racing, finishing third overall. The mostly singletrack, two-loop course included 1400 feet of climbing and two small stream crossings.

Full results are available here. The second race in the series, the Twin Lakes 12K, will be on July 6 in Hurley. The series concludes with a trail half-marathon on August 16 in the Mohonk Preserve, which should be a nice prep for the Pfalz Point run and the fall marathon season.
